The latest Singapore National Day theme song is hideous. To give Jimmy Ye and Kit Chan credit, the melody was decent. It sounded like something that came right out of a Broadway musical, and she sang it well.

The lyrics? They started off sounding like a geography textbook. It's not without its benefits though, now Singaporean kids will know where Cairo, Bombay, Broadway, Eiffel Tower, Great Wall, Hollywood, LA, London Bridge, Big Ben, Thames, UK, and last but not least River Kwai, is.

But in general, the lyrics sucked. It geared too much towards the socially mobile yuppies, and totally alienating the working class who are stuck in Singapore all the time. As a national song, it is important to take into account everyone in the country.

Even though "Count on me Singapore" was sooo cheesy, it did the job. So did "Home". Heck, it made me tear one time I was faraway. Perhaps times have changed. Maybe majority of Singaporeans wander around the world all the time. Or maybe they just don't give a hoot about the socially immobile and not-so-well-travelled.

"I've climbed the Eiffel Tower, the Great Wall in one hour?" What kinda lyrics is this? How can you climb the Great Wall in one hour?

"Experienced sweet and sour but that's okay??!!" Can he be lazier?

"Seen Hollywood, the sunsets in LA"?? Erm, doh, of coz Hollywood is in LA, Bollywood in India.

"The London Bridge, Big Ben, the Thames in UK" Great, more geography lessons.

"And even though I've roamed the world, It's still my home I long to see." How about those people who hasn't "roamed the world"?

"This is where my family and my friends grow old with me" Tell that to the Singaporeans who have migrated to cheaper or slower places. As we all know, growing old in Singapore is no small feat if you are not rich...

Dang this is such a yuppie, rich man's song, I can't stand it. Yes, I'm not even Singaporean, and I'm obviously not rich. So there, let the hate mail come.
